VETERANS

This page is dedicated to the members of our class who have served our country in the armed forces or as a civilian attached to a military unit in a combat theater.

Throughout our country's history, the rights we often take for granted have been earned, preserved and paid for by soldiers.  In the words of a military chaplain:

It is the Soldier

"It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier,
Who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
Whose coffin is draped by the flag,
And Who allows the protester to burn the flag."

[ By Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC ]

Members of the armed forces are governed by a code of conduct which in a few paragraphs, defines the depth and scope of a soldier's commitment and the basis for the brotherhood that is forged from military service.  The current code for today's soldiers has been amended to reflect politically correct language.  Because most of our classmates served during the Vietnam War, what follows is the code as it existed during the service of our classmates.  Let it be a reminder to those who have served, and for those that have not, hopefully, a source of understanding.

ARTICLE I
(1) I am an American fighting man.  I serve in the forces which guard my country and our way of life.  I am prepared to give my life in their defense.
ARTICLE II
(2) I will never surrender of my own free will.  If in command I will never surrender my men while they still have the means to resist.
ARTICLE III
(3) If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and aid others to escape.  I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.
ARTICLE IV
(4) If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information or take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades.
ARTICLE V
(5) When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am bound to give only name, rank, service number, and date of birth.
ARTICLE VI
(6) I will never forget that I am an American fighting man, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free.  I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.

We proudly list our classmates who served our Country, their Branch of Service (USA - ARMY, USN - NAVY, USMC - MARINE CORPS, USAF -AIR FORCE, CIV - CIVILIAN), combat theatres in which they served with combat designation for those who experienced enemy fire.
